Ascot is almost here, and whether you go every year and have been looking forward to it since January, or if you’ve only just started thinking about what to wear, now is the time to get your outfit in order. The event may centre around racing, but let's be honest: fashion is just as much a part of the spectacle. From oversized hats to elegant dresses, Ascot has always been about showing up and showing out, albeit with a few rules to follow.

If you're anything like me, you might associate Ascot with images of overly prim, conservative outfits, stiff fascinators and a slightly overwhelming list of dos and don'ts. But in reality, dressing for the racecourse has evolved. Whilst there are still official guidelines—particularly for certain enclosures—the modern approach to race-day fashion is far more creative than you might expect. It's less about fitting into a rigid mould and more about expressing your style within the parameters. You'll still want a hat for some outfits (or at least a very good headpiece), but gone are the days of cookie-cutter occasionwear. Now, there's room for bold colours, directional tailoring and even a flat shoe, if you style it right.

That's not to say your outfit has to cost a fortune, either. As much as the races are a natural home to British designers like Emilia Wickstead and Erdem, I've found that this year, some of the most head-turning race-day looks come from the high street. For example, a great blazer and midi skirt from & Other Stories paired with a strong accessory moment courtesy of Missoma can look just as elevated as any runway look, especially when styled with confidence. Plus, updated accessories like minimal clutch bags and sculptural slingbacks have a certain Ascot energy without veering into costume territory.

Granted, I'll always think of My Fair Lady when I think about Ascot, not just for the (admittedly over-the-top) race-day scene, but for the transformation achieved by the clothes, but you don't need a Hollywood budget to create that feeling. In short, looking the part is far more achievable than you might think, and it's proof that dressing for traditional events is still very much in fashion when you add fresh energy and modern proportions into the mix.

So, if you're wondering what to wear to Ascot this year, scroll on. These outfit ideas combine everything I love about this particular spot on the fashion calendar: playful styling, heritage references and pieces that will work hard in your wardrobe well beyond race day.

5 Chic Ascot 2025 Outfits

1. Black Dress + Mules + Clutch Bag

Style Notes: There's something about a black dress at Ascot that feels quietly confident. It's the opposite of try-hard: sleek, classic and surprisingly versatile. Whilst lighter colours dominate race-day dressing, black brings a refined minimalism that instantly stands out. Pair it with some cute mules and a clutch for balance. Bonus points if the dress has interesting details like an open back or an asymmetric hem; those subtle twists will elevate the look.

2. Blazer + Poplin Skirt + Block Heels

Style Notes: This is the kind of outfit that's perfect for transitional weather and anyone who doesn't want to feel overdressed. A blazer instantly sharpens up a floaty poplin skirt, and the contrast in structure makes the outfit feel thoughtfully styled. Block-heeled sandals add comfort without compromising height, which is especially useful when navigating grassy enclosures. If you love a low-key tailored moment, this is your route.

3. Puff Sleeve Dress + Wedge Sandals + Top-Handle Bag

Style Notes: A puff-sleeve dress feels instantly Ascot-ready—structured yet playful. This season's styles lean sleek rather than fussy, with soft florals and pale pinks leading the way. A refined wedge sandal (which we saw a lot of at Chloé this season) gives that extra summer push, and a structured top-handle bag will balance the softness.

4. Off-the-Shoulder Two-Tone Dress + Ballet Flats

Style Notes: For those who like their occasionwear to feel a little less traditional, but no less refined, an off-the-shoulder dress offers that balance and keeps to the dress code. It's romantic without being too cutesy, and when done in a modern two-tone palette, it makes just the right kind of statement. Ballet flats give this outfit a grounded feel and offer some very welcome comfort if you're on your feet all day.

Style Notes: Maxi dresses are the ultimate no-fuss option—elegant, light and easy to style. Look for ones with pleated skirts or satin finishes to elevate the look. A slingback heel keeps things smart and practical, and a sculpted sun hat adds the perfect finishing touch.
